In what is seen as a big blow to Indian tennis, Paes has reportedly said that he would not play with Mahesh Bhupathi ‘on a regular basis.’

Bhupathi reacted by saying he was ‘hurt’ and ‘disappointed’. Bhupathi said he had held his tongue throughout the tournament to concentrate on wining gold for India. "The goal was to win a gold medal for India and that has been done," he added.

The Lee-Hesh duo had earlier in the day won the men’s doubles gold at the Asian Games at Doha creating hopes of a revival of the ‘Indian Express’ magic.

In an interview to a TV channel, Bhupathi said he was hurt by Paes’ comments for the last 12 years and that the last 10 days have been like living through a ‘soap opera’. He added that it was clear that Leander 'never wanted to play with me'. He said that he was happy their partnership ended on a high and called their ‘split’ the greatest tragedy for Indian sports.
